Azure PaaS is Dead - Death by Container

One of Azure's big initial innovations was their PaaS platforms.  These services were a level up  from most of Amazon's offerings. Microsoft appears to be in the process of killing of their traditional offerings. They are instead exposing the containerized underpinnings and forcing customers to do their own packaging and Docker image construction.  This makes sense for large enterprises but means that teams need to understand the underlying O/S software modules and system components that may need to be installed in their containers. PaaS PaaS makes it easier for less sophisticated teams to deploy sophisticated scalable applications. Azure PaaS lets customers deploy applications without worrying about the Operating System, System Patching, CVE security scanning , load balancing, log aggregation, or other issues.  The opacity of the underlying system meant teams had to know less and that teams couldn't know more if they wanted too. Docker on Azure PaaS - Tika Parser

Azure PaaS services are an example of how the cloud has raised the raised the bar in the commodity platform space. More functionality is baked into the platform and less has to be built by software developers and enterprises. Some of the PaaS tenants are that it should be simple to scale-up and scale-out.  Networking should be simple and port exposure should be simple. Microsoft has at least 3 different Container services with different levels of PaaS-ness. They appear to be targeted more at Enterprise customers than the original SMB oriented PaaS services. It may be that the original ones just didn't support enterprise security, networking and other needs. Micro Clound Foundry V2 - PaaS on a stick the easy way with Stackato

Death Notice  Stackato was sold to HP and rebranded as Helion. The entire Helion product line was killed in 2016 Previous Blog Text Cloud Foundry  Open Source Platform as a Service (PaaS). It was initially driven by VMWare and later given to Pivotal when it was spun off from VMWare and EMC. The original version of Cloud Foundry was available as a hosted service and in a Micro  developer version that ran on a single VM that could be hosted on a developer workstation.  A community grew around this and there are now multiple versions of Cloud Foundry available. Cloud Foundry supports a Multi-tenant architecture where a cloud can support multiple organizations  each of which can have multiple spaces  to partition their work.  This architecture is available across all CF PaaS installations.
